I spent a week trying to code and this is what I learnt

Since the beginning of this year, I have felt really stuck with not knowing what to do with my life. Since returning back to the UK due to the pandemic and not being able to travel, I have lost a huge part of who I am.

So a few months ago, I decided to try and find something I enjoy doing and that maybe I could make a career out of.

The first skill I thought I would try would be coding. I knew absolutely nothing about coding or where to start but an ad for Codecademy came up on my facebook. I decided to go for the free version as I did not want to invest any money into this if I was not sure that I would continue or not after trying it out for a week.

When I first went onto the Codecademy website I had no idea where to really begin. I decided to first start with HTML. As I had heard about this previously and knew parts due to having a blog. The first part of this course was HTML elements and Structure. This was as far as I got in the first couple of days.I spent the first couple of days learning HTML and after that I decided to look at Swift. I knew that this was for iOS and thought it could be something I would be interested in. But did not stick to this for very long.

It’s now a few months since I originally started learning to code and I have made a lot of changes.

For one I am not all over the place with learning different bits for a few days at a time. I have committed to paying for the pro version which provides me with a lot more structure. Instead of picking what to learn, I have chosen a career path to follow and Codecademy has a programme for it.

I decided to choose the Full Stack Engineer programme. This starts with front end then moves on to back end and how to connect the two. Which mean I can learn as well as complete project I may be able to put into my portfolio one day.

The goal is to try complete the programme within 6 months. I feel like I know less now than I did before I started. But I think that is due to not realising how much there really is to learn.

I’m not sure if this is something I will continue on with yet after finishing the course but it has definitely kept me busy during lockdown.
